La Batisse
779 Dutchess Turnpike (route 44)
Poughkeepsie NY United States
La Batisse serves Country French fare in an warm and cozy setting. The restaurant is an old farmhouse dating to the 1850s with 3 fireplaces. The sunroom is great, and the outside patio serves an additional 40 people under bright umbrellas. The restaurant was started by Max Bernard who owned restaurants in Manhattan for 25 years, including Park Bistro and Les Halles. The food is very much country French Bistro. It's simple and unpretentious. The menu includes a variety of steaks with a choice of French sauces and frittes. The menu also includes poached salmon with dill, monk fish with shitake mushroom, duck with a brandied cherry sauce, lamb shank with couscous and dried fruits, etc. So there's a nice variety. The entrees are served with au gratin or mashed potatoes as well as Mediterranian vegetables. The dessert menu includes the full range from chocolate mousse to lemon tart to fruit with complementary sorbet. The wine list is extensive without being overwhelming.
