Dunbar's
4927 Freret St.
New Orleans LA United States
A no-frills two-story Creole sticks-to-the-ribs soul-food restaurant located in the Freret neighborhood, completely off the tourist trail. Red Beans and Rice, with either fried chicken or turkey necks and a few slices of homemade cornbread, is the specialty of the house. It's an "all you can eat" dish but few people can have more than a plate. Although the name Dunbar's isn't as well known as "Emeril" or "Mother's", Mrs. Dunbar's recipe for beans is found in many New Orleans cookbooks. A sticky okra gumbo and smothered okra are also renowned Dunbar's dishes. Other creole and soul-food favorites, like greens, fried oyster po'boys, and etoufee are also served. Free, homemade lemonade is available (with meal) to students showing ID.
