English's Oyster Bar and Seafood
29 - 31 East Street
Brighton and Hove England United Kingdom
English's is a Brighton institution having been in existence as a seafood restaurant for over 150 years. It is a hodge-podge of separate dining areas spread over several floors of what were once three fisherman's cottages, built almsot 400 years ago. The Spode Room has murals depicting Edwardian dinner scenes; the Wedgwood Room, After- Dinner scenes and Minton the famous 'handbag' scene from 'The Importance of Being Ernest' complete with Oscar Wilde There is an Oyster Bar near the entrance and tables in the traffic free square outside in good weather. The atmosphere epitomises 'old Brighton' the slightly risque, slightly gone-to-seed, but still genteel Brighton of the post-war years.
