De Waag
Rode Steen 8
Hoorn Noord Holland Netherlands
The Waag is a 1609 building where in the old day's products were weighed and traded. Its located at the historical centre of Hoorn, the Rode Steen. Here is where the history of Hoorn started. Nowadays it serves as a grand café and restaurant, but great care was taken to keep the building orignal. The huge scales still hang from the ceiling and as a whole the building is in good condition. The grand café is at base level. You can sit outside, as wel as inside. The big multiple entries to the waag are sealed of with glass, giving a good view over the Rode Steen and some of its historical buildings. On the other side they provide good natural light inside. The restaurant itself is on the first floor, with big windows providing just as good a view as the base level grand café. The restaurant is, like all restaurants at the Rode Steen, a few hundred meters from the parking area's. Recommended parking areas are: Kerkplein, Achterom, Westerdijk. (The grand cafe is at street level and altough a bit narrow between the tables it should be accessible with a wheelchair. Floor is made out of rough stones, if you've got really great stability problems it might be a problem. But normally it is not a big issue. I don't know about the toilets.)
