The Dropping Well
Classons Bridge
Dublin Co. Dublin Ireland
In the past The Dropping Well has hosted a community morgue, been the birthplace of the Holy Hour and been home to Prize Boxing. Established in black 1847 when the famine was at its height, by John Howe and his wife, the licensed premises also housed a community morgue. Here the bodies of starvation victims were taken before burial. At the turn of the century, and with the morgue long gone, PH Meagher bought the premises and created a new attraction within the pub, a specially erected boxing ring. For £50, PH, nicknamed Boxer Meagher, took on anyone who wanted to fight and he is now commemorated in the traditional bar at The Dropping Well which bears his name. According to local folklore the Holy Hour was also born at The Dropping Well courtesy of Minister for Justice and Home Affairs, Kevin O’Higgins. Having watched the bar fill up one Saturday afternoon the minister consequently introduced a clause into the Intoxicating Liquor Act which was being drafted requiring all pubs to close between the hours of 2.30 and 3.30 pm. This became one of the most flouted rules in Irish history.
