Penang
82-84 Broadway
Queens NY United States
Located in a small strip mall along with several other Asian restaurants and a new large Chinese supermarket. On their menu, Penang, the name of the restaurant and the name of a major city in Malaysia, has a subtitle of "Malaysian cuisine & Sushi Bar." Since at least 1997 there has been nothing similar to sushi to be found there. What is found is a great variety of Malaysian dishes with emphasis on seafood. Beef, chicken and pork are also present in the many strong flavored and spicy dishes. As well are found most all the signature dishes that are becoming known in the US to those who have discovered Malaysian cuisine: roti canai (a very light, crispy Indian style crepe served with a mild chicken and potato curry), hainanese chicken (subtly ginger flavored steamed chicken served with specially spiced soy sauce), sarang burong (fried nest of taro potato with shrimp, chicken, baby corn, snow peas, black mushrooms and cashew nuts stir fry poured over it) and many spicy curry inspired dishes.
